Our Four Guiding Stars

We have identified four main areas of focus for our community, four "guiding stars" to help us find our way. These stars are a crucial part of our identity and shape most of our church activities.

  • Connected Community

We seek to be the sort of community that lives out this description of the church from author Adrian Plass: “We the lost and the found, the sure and the unsure, the joyful and the sad, the native and the stranger, the wise and the simple, the leaders and the learners, the healthy and the sick, those who depart and those who return, those in the light and those in the darkness, those who are saintly and those who are not - all who say yes to the suffering, triumphant Jesus - we are the body of Christ.”

  • Care for Students

We want young adults to be able to say, “This is a community that cares for me well”. Young adults have flocked to Wellington for education and work for over a century and for much of that time Central has responded with a warm welcome, and a safe and nurturing place to live. We seek to continue this tradition by providing hostel accommodation for students and other young adults moving to Wellington, and by providing a safe place to explore matters of life and faith.

  • Centre for Theological and Spiritual Engagement

We aspire to be a church community that encourages spiritual formation and good thinking, whether in Sunday gatherings, small groups, or providing reflective spaces for special seasons. We want to use our resources to encourage thinking and reflection on faith and theology, seeking to listen to a range of voices both from within our community and from outside of our own tradition.

  • Care for the City

We want to be a church that is connected with the needs of inner city Wellington. For us that means being active in some key partnerships, like with the Stillwaters community, Te Aro Health Centre, and supporting other organisations through our Boulcott Fund. Many of us work in business and education, health and government in the Central city, and others live in the CBD. We hope by the way we live and work in our city we are pointing people towards God’s kingdom.
